★ Our Atlantic ocean base camp

The 100 Wild Islands is one of the last intact coastal wilderness archipelagos in North America: 282 islands sprawling across Nova Scotia's Eastern Shore, just an hour from Halifax but a world away from everything. Turquoise water, white sand beaches, boreal rainforest, seals, seabirds, and ocean tides. If you've paddled sheltered water and wondered what the ocean feels like, this is your answer.

This trip runs as a base camp. We set up at Norse Cove Kayak Centre on the edge of the archipelago and paddle out into the islands each day, so your boat stays light and there is a hot shower waiting at the end of it. Days are coached and unhurried, and the group reads tide and weather together. The final day moves to the granite coast at Peggy's Cove.

Itinerary

Each day's route is chosen on the day, around tide, wind, and swell. That is ocean paddling.

Day 0: Norse Cove
Arrive the evening before Day 1. Meet the group, set up camp, then the pre-trip briefing and gear check.
Days 1 to 4: The Islands
Day paddles from base into the archipelago: outer islands, white sand beaches, and the run toward Taylor's Head when conditions allow. Tidal navigation, wildlife, and time to just be out there. Back to camp each evening.
Day 5: Peggy's Cove
Conditions permitting, we pack up camp and move to Peggy's Cove for a final paddle on the granite coast, then fish and chips. You finish about 45 minutes from Halifax airport. If the ocean rules Peggy's Cove out, we paddle from base instead.

What's Included

  • ✔ Five-day instructional base camp expedition with experienced Kayak Maritimes coaches at a 1:4 ratio
  • ✔ Group camp site at our Norse Cove base, starting the night before Day 1
  • ✔ Shared group camp gear: tarps and a group kitchen
  • ✔ A final day at Peggy's Cove, conditions permitting

What to Bring

  • — Sea kayak and paddling kit (paddle, PFD, spray skirt): bring your own, or rent from us and select at checkout
  • — Your own transport to Norse Cove, and to Peggy's Cove on the final day. Rental boats travel with us.
  • — Tent, sleeping bag and sleeping pad
  • — Personal paddling clothing: wetsuit or dry suit and layers
  • — All your food: meals are self-catered, so bring what you need to cook breakfasts, lunches and dinners for the trip, plus plenty of snacks for the water.

Good to Know

  • — This is tidal ocean paddling. Currents, fog, and swell are part of the environment, and paddling from a fixed camp lets us pick the right water for each day.
  • — Norse Cove Kayak Centre is our base for the whole trip, with showers and washrooms on site. Only your day kit goes in the boat, so there is no squeezing a week of gear through a hatch.
  • — The 100 Wild Islands archipelago covers 282 islands across Nova Scotia's Eastern Shore. Where we paddle each day depends on conditions.
  • — Rentals available: sea kayak, dry suit, and camping gear. Select your rentals at checkout.

Prerequisite: Paddle Canada Sea Kayak Level 1 minimum, Level 2 strongly recommended. An equivalent ORCKA sea kayak Level 1 also qualifies. This is tidal ocean water. If you only have Level 1 and sheltered-water experience, do your Level 2 first. Not sure? Get in touch.

Questions

Do I need my own kayak or gear?
You can rent what you need: kayak, paddle, PFD, spray skirt, dry suit, and personal camping gear. Select your rentals at checkout. Shared group camp gear is included, and you bring your own tent, sleeping kit and paddling layers. Bringing your own boat and gear is welcome.
Where do we sleep?
In your own tent at our group site at Norse Cove, every night of the trip including the night before Day 1. Showers and washrooms are on site.
How do I get there?
Fly into Halifax Stanfield (YHZ), rent a car at the airport, and drive about an hour and a quarter east to Norse Cove. Plan to arrive the evening before Day 1 and to travel home the day after Day 5.
How does food work?
Meals are self-catered. You bring and cook your own food for the trip, using the group kitchen at base camp. Pack plenty of snacks for the water.
Is Level 2 really necessary?
It's strongly recommended. The 100 Wild Islands is tidal Atlantic coastline, and fog, swell, and current are routine. Base camp days are gentler, but the water is the same. If you only have Level 1, email us and we'll assess honestly.
What if the weather is bad?
The ocean sets the agenda, and base camp gives us options. On rough days we work the sheltered water behind the islands; on calm days we push out to the outer beaches. Learning to read and respond to maritime conditions is part of the experience.
Can I earn a certification on this trip?
Yes, at Level 1. Pair it with the ORCKA Kayak Tripping Level 1 online module to be assessed and certify. Prefer just the paddling? The trip stands on its own with no assessment.

Certification

This base camp expedition qualifies for ORCKA Kayak Tripping Level 1. Come to paddle with no assessment, or pair it with the KT1 online module to certify. The online module is hosted by our sister brand, Kayak Ontario, so the link opens kayak-ontario.com.
